Episode #59: Choosing Farmers’ Markets For Healthy, Affordable Eating

farm to table

Looking to make healthy eating choices, but worried about the costs? Think that farmers’ markets are just for chefs and professionals? Organic, locally sourced food is often thought to be expensive and out of reach for home cooks, but Mark ‘Farmer Mark’ Anderson is here to bust those myths and to tell us about his farmers’ market program that’s sweeping across Los Angeles and the Orange County. Local farmers can supply high quality fresh produce at prices to match or even beat grocery store rates, and the fresh food they produce is second to none.

We speak to Farmer Mark about his surprising journey from the business world to agriculture, and how his five newly established farmers’ markets have gone from strength to strength. These markets are part of rising movement to make organic, healthy and fresh produce available to shoppers, and to help us all make better choices about the food we eat. Not only can you discover a new world of tastes and textures, you can speak to the growers and discover more about the food you eat.

We also look at how demand for fresh produce is growing, as Mark tells us to vote with our forks and to shop locally, encouraging better foods and a trend towards openness when it comes to food retail.
